The Chinese hukou system of household registration, designed to prevent and control the mass influx of rural inhabitants to China’s cities, bars Beijing’s migrant construction workers from social welfare benefits such as medical care, which are only available to legally registered urban residents. The worker told Human Rights Watch: “(The company representative) said ‘the money hasn’t arrived yet’ (or) ‘the boss isn’t here’ (or) ‘the boss is busy,’ and so on, with such excuses for the delay.” One worker told Human Rights Watch: “Since I first arrived at the work site, every day I’ve worked, I don’t have any money and I’ve never left for relaxation.”Īnother migrant worker explained how he was paid nothing, despite an oral agreement that his seven months’ wages would be paid in full at the completion of the project. Some employers refuse to pay anything at all. The Human Rights Watch report documents how employers routinely force migrants to work, withhold wages for up to a year, then offer a lump sum payment which is considerably below the agreed wage rate and Beijing’s minimum wage rate. And when it comes to basic social services, the government still discriminates against migrants.” “Despite years of government rhetoric, employers still cheat migrant construction workers of hard-earned wages. “The Chinese government is all talk and no action when it comes to delivering meaningful protection and social services for migrant construction workers,” said Sophie Richardson, Asia advocacy director at Human Rights Watch. The Beijing Olympic Games begin on August 8, 2008. These workers are the muscle behind completion of Olympic Games-related infrastructure and sporting venues. An estimated 1 million migrant construction workers, hailing from other parts of China, make up nearly 90 percent of Beijing’s construction workforce. The 61-page report, “One Year of My Blood,” documents the Chinese government’s failure to fulfill long-repeated promises to protect the rights of migrant construction workers, as well as to end deprivations caused by the discriminatory nature of China’s household registration (hukou) system. (New York) - Migrant construction workers building the “new Beijing” are routinely exploited by being denied proper wages, under dangerous conditions with neither accident insurance nor access to medical and other social services, Human Rights Watch said in a new report released today. Here’s a video tutorial where I show how to convert and edit an SVG in PowerPoint.Ĭlick here to watch the YouTube tutorial.Īs you can see, it’s super easy to edit SVG files in PowerPoint. How to Edit SVG in PowerPoint Video Tutorial I like to save as a PNG file so that the transparent part of the image remains transparent. You can regroup the object and right-click to save as an image. For example, I removed the background content and just isolated the guy on the computer. Once the image is ungrouped you can edit it. Now the image is broken into multiple shapes where you can edit them as you wish.Once it’s converted, you need to ungroup the image. In the format toolbar (or via right-click) select Convert to Shape. If you don’t see it in your version of PowerPoint, you’ll need to upgrade to the Office 365 version. The newest version of PowerPoint has a “Convert to Shape” feature. What you’ll do is convert the SVG image into an object that can be edited in PowerPoint. Voila! I will add, that I’ve had a few SVG files that didn’t work, but for the most part it’s been smooth sailing. Insert a picture by using Insert>Pictures on the toolbar. This will allow you to keep the image clear when exporting, converting to a different format, or presenting on really large displays. Unless of course, you know how to use PowerPoint. 1 Answer Sorted by: 0 This is probably too late, but converting to a 'metafile' will ensure that visual clarity remains intact: Right click on the image, select 'Convert', then choose 'To Metafile'. However, to edit them requires knowing how to do so with an illustration program. This is great because they can be edited and customized. In fact, one of the sites where I buy images has the option to download SVG images. And that’s a big deal because we’re starting to see more SVG images every day. The good news is that now you can edit SVG images in PowerPoint. The OREI European Power Adapter Plug is a no-frills, cost-effective solution for American travelers to Europe and Russia. at 110V, 1,380 watts max at 230V | Dimensions: 3.2 x 2.2 x 2.6 inches | USB Ports: 2 Interchangeable input and outlet sockets allow you to use the power adapter in more than 150 countries. This is also an excellent purchase for those planning a European trip with stops in countries that don't accept the standard Type E/F plug. Travelers from North America may need a voltage converter for non-dual-voltage devices, but Joan found that the adapter worked well with a converter as it did alone. "We did notice a slight issue with some of the prongs getting stuck on the way out, but it was easily fixed by wiggling the slider back and forth." "After those few initial seconds, it charged our devices smoothly and without making a sound," she said. Our product tester, Rebekah Joan, tested the adapter's reliability abroad and noticed a slight delay in the electricity getting from one point to another. If you travel frequently, consider investing in the HAOZI All-in-One Universal Travel Adapter rather than limiting yourself to one exclusively for Europe. The downsides? It's not suitable for use with high-powered appliances, including hair dryers, and at 2.2 x 3.2 x 2.6 inches, it's slightly bulkier than your standard single adapter. It's FCC, CE, and RoHS safety-certified, while a lifetime guarantee gives you confidence in your purchase. In addition to a single AC power socket, the HAOZI Universal Travel Adapter features two USB ports-all of which can be used simultaneously. | Dimensions: 4.8 x 3.13 x 1.47 inches | USB Ports: 4 There is also a detachable 5-foot cord for easy packing. What makes up for this is the converter's small size, measuring 4.8 x 3.1 x 1.5 inches for a device that "will save you space and money," according to our tester. It is only compatible with devices within the 110- to 120-volt range, which includes most American devices. Be wary of using curling irons, hair dryers, or hair straighteners, as Foval notes that it isn't safe to use with these tools. The converter automatically shuts down to prevent overloading, overheating, or short-circuiting, keeping you and your appliances safe. Other than the expected slight delay, everything ran smoothly." "We charged plenty with it, including our phones, a portable charger, and our camera. "It started making a quiet whirring noise, and in a second or two, our devices were charging at a normal pace," Joan said. plugs and four 5V/2.4A USB ports, you can charge an array of devices simultaneously-just make sure that the total wattage doesn't exceed 200. This made it convenient for our product tester, Rebekah Joan, to travel with the device, only needing the correct adapter to attach it, plugging it into a socket, and pressing the power button to get it to work. Plus, it has a European power cable and three removable adapters for the U.S., the U.K., and Australia, so you can also use it for other trips. Although priced higher than most adapters, it converts 220/240V to 110/120V, allowing you to use your single-voltage American appliances in Europe safely. This is where the Foval Power Step-Down Converter comes in. While many modern devices can transition automatically between different voltages, some can't. On the flip side, other parts of the brain (the frontal and prefrontal cortices, which are involved with our ability to plan, think through things and apply logic and order) are less active during dreaming compared with other parts of sleep and wakefulness (that research also goes back to the late 1990s). And more recent work from Baird’s group suggests that areas of the brain known to be involved in visual processing (the regions that appear to allow us to register colors, motion, and faces) are active during dreaming. Studies going back to the 1990s suggest the amygdala (a part of our brain that plays a role in emotional processing) appear to be very active during dreaming. “And it does match the psychology in some interesting ways,” says Benjamin Baird, PhD, a researcher at the Center for Sleep and Consciousness at University of Wisconsin-Madison, whose work focuses on understanding the neural mechanisms of consciousness. Researchers have measured brain activity during sleep and during dreaming. ( Erin Wamsley, PhD, an assistant professor in the Psychology Department at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, explains all of those studies in further depth in a review article in a 2014 issue of Current Neurology and Neuroscience Reports.)Īnd more research suggests that dreaming does actually help us problem solve.Ī set of experiments conducted by Wamsley’s and Stickgold’s group (when Wamsley was at Harvard) showed that when a group of 99 individuals were given the task of navigating a complex maze, those whose performance on the task improved the most when re-tested after a five-hour period were those individuals given the opportunity to take a nap - and more specifically those who reported dreaming about the maze during that nap - compared to when they were simply awake during that time (even if they reported thinking about the maze during that period of being awake).ĭuring dreaming, the visual and emotional processing areas of the brain are active Other research shows that we are more likely to remember something if we dream about it. Several studies show (what nearly everyone has probably experienced on their own) that our waking experiences show up in our dreams. “It might be that you need to bring that sleep-dependent memory processing into consciousness to be able to solve those kinds of problems that require the development of a plan or a narrative or a plot,” Stickgold says - that you need to dream to do that kind of thinking. But that type of narrative construction (building a story) still requires us to be consciously aware, Stickgold says - which is one feature of dreams. That’s what our brains can’t do in the background when we’re awake. There are certain questions that come up for which we plot a potential course of action or think through a future scenario to solve, Stickgold explains. triloks / Getty Images/iStockphoto The dreaming brain can build stories better than a brain that’s awake (And there’s a whole lot of evidence to support the idea that sleep makes learning and memory storing possible.)Īnd it might be that dreaming plays a role in that process, Stickgold says - “where the brain is trying to solve problems and complete processes that were going on during waking that it - in its waking hours - didn’t complete.” Even the really weird dreams may just be part of the brain’s process of elimination-approach to problem solving, experts say. Our brains need offline time for processing and learning new things - and they do this during sleep.
